Agan Off To Great Start For 2017

Knoxville, IA (April 5, 2017) Agan Motorsports had a successful season opener with the Sprint Invaders on Saturday at 34 Raceway in Burlington, IA. The team was thankful for all the work put in by the 34 Raceway crew to get both the pit area and track ready for the show following over 4 inches of rain.

The night began with an outside front row heat race starting spot. Following a good start the Dee Zee #4 jumped out to a commanding lead. After leading every lap the win was by a half lap distance over the second place finisher.

A heat race win then sent Jon to the dash, where he started in the fifth position. Moving forward, the result was a third place finish. The post-dash draw led to a fourth place starting spot for the 25 lap feature event.

To say the feature was eventful would be a bit of an understatement. All the rain made for a fast but very narrow racing groove. “We had great speed all night long but had to be conservative and that wasn’t easy when you just want to get after it.”

Following some early race excitement Jon raced his way into 3rd position. “I was a little over aggressive at the start of the feature. The car bicycled so hard in the middle of turn 3 and 4. I was just happy I somehow got it to come back down on all four tires.” Once things settled down Jon began to run down the lead cars. “A yellow came out after the halfway point. We were right behind the two leaders prior to the caution. On the yellow laps I was trying to run down all the heavy dirt above the narrow racing groove. I knew we were faster and had to take a shot at the lead on the restart.” Jon did just that running up above the other cars driving into second place and nearly even with the leader on exit of turn two just as another yellow flag was displayed. “That was our shot and I think we would have had it if the yellow doesn’t come out.” Jon had to restart 3rd again and wasn’t able to attempt the same move. “We raced our way back into second and ran down the leader. I feel that we were faster but it was so narrow and lap traffic was difficult to maneuver through. I didn’t want to over drive the car and cause an issue for ourselves or take anyone out. The last thing we needed to do was crash a car the first night out”

As much as the team wanted to win. everyone was content with a strong first outing to the 2017 season. “We obviously wanted to start off with a win. Everyone is confident in our potential for this season. Last year was a rough one for us and not our norm by any means. I am feeling very good and am extremely excited to consistently return to our old form of winning and finishing up front for all of our supporters and team members.”

Next up for the team is I-80 Speedway with the Nebraska 360 Sprints this Friday and Saturday, April 7th and 8th.
